What if the biggest thing we ever did in our life was just lived an ordinary life? No accolades, no awards or making it to the top of the professional ladder. What if all we became known for was being the neighbor across the street who would watch the kids play in the streets and said “mine them cars nah!” Or the one who worked the same custodial job at a primary school in a small town for 25 years and served as an usher in the Baptist church.
Before we’re even born, so many wishes, hopes and dreams are placed on our shoulders by those who made and carried us for nine and a half months. A lot of that weight is felt by us first born and/or eldest daughters. Some of us were told that we could be whatever we wanted to be when we grew up and got the fullest support from our parents. Others of us got told you can become a lawyer, doctor, nurse or some other “noble” career or become a shame to the family. So we work hard to achieve the goals, make them proud and find our way.
And then life happens. A life altering event that marks who were and who we are now. And if you’re from a religious culture, “it was all a part of God’s plan for your life”. Is it though?
And as you work hard to build a life on the other side of this thing, people tell you that God has a bigger plan for your life, which may totally be true, but that bigger plan may not result in achieving some great thing. It might just be that you were in the right place at the right time to help someone in need who then becomes some important surgeon that saves your life years down the road.
Or maybe not.
Or maybe you simply become a better version of yourself, however altered you may be from who you once were going to be had that thing not happened to you.
